The Strategic Support Force was established in December 2015 as part of Xi Jinping's sweeping reorganization of the People's Liberation Army — the most radical restructuring of China's military since the 1950s. It consolidated space, cyber, electronic, and psychological warfare capabilities into a single branch, a move driven partly by lessons drawn from observing U.S. network-centric operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. This coin, issued for the PLA's 90th anniversary in 2017, marks the SSF's first appearance on Chinese commemorative coinage, making it a document of an institution barely two years old at the time of striking.
