Obverse description The national arms of the People's Republic of China occupy the central field, depicting Tiananmen Gate surmounted by five stars — one large star flanked by four smaller stars — and framed on either side by symmetrical sheaves of wheat tied with a ribbon at the base. The legend 中华人民共和国 (People's Republic of China) arcs in relief along the upper periphery in Chinese characters, while the date 1986 is inscribed in the exergue below the emblem. The composition is rendered in a crisp, medallic style consistent with Chinese commemorative issues of the period.

Reverse description A naturalistically rendered giant panda is depicted in three-quarter view facing left, seated upon a fallen log amid a composition of bamboo shoots to the left and a pine tree to the right, with a stylized mountainous landscape receding into the background. The curved legend 世界野生动物基金会成立25周年 (25th Anniversary of the Founding of the World Wildlife Fund) arcs along the upper periphery in raised Chinese characters. The denomination 5元 is inscribed prominently in the lower central field, flanked by bamboo and pine foliage in low relief. The design exemplifies the high-relief, naturalistic engraving style characteristic of Chinese commemorative silver coinage from the mid-1980s.
