Obverse description Central field displays the Imperial chrysanthemum crest (kiku mon), the sixteen-petalled chrysanthemum serving as the Emperor's royal seal, rendered in high relief. Flanking the central crest are decorative sprays of paulownia (kiri) and chrysanthemum blossoms with characteristic heart-shaped paulownia leaves. The denomination is expressed in Chinese numerals in the lower field, with the character 五 (five) above 圓 (yen), reading vertically.
Obverse script Chinese (Kanji)

Reverse description A radiant rising sun is depicted at centre within a decorative floral cartouche, emblematic of Japan. The design is encircled by a legend in classical Chinese characters reading 'Great Japan, Year [X] of Taishō, 5 Yen', interrupted at intervals by small paulownia flower seals serving as decorative punctuation marks. The overall composition reflects the formal Meiji-era artistic tradition carried into the Taishō period, with fine engraving and strong relief throughout the reverse field.
