Obverse description The obverse is printed in grey-green and black intaglio, with an intricate guilloche border incorporating floral rosettes at each corner. A vignette at left centre shows a Shinto torii gate set along a tree-lined stone path leading to a shrine. The large kanji denomination 五圓 (Five Yen) is printed in bold characters to the right of the vignette, flanked by vertical columns of Japanese text giving the bank name and redemption clause, with a red circular Bank of Taiwan seal and the imprint of the Imperial Japanese Government Printing Bureau along the lower margin.

Reverse description The reverse is printed in olive-green and grey, dominated by an elaborate guilloche frame with twin dragon vignettes flanking each side. The central vignette shows a coastal seascape with a lighthouse visible in the distance against an open sky. The Bank of Taiwan logotype appears within a circular device at the top centre, with the bank name in kanji above the central scene and the denomination numeral 5 repeated in each corner.
