This coin was issued in 1975, the year North Vietnamese forces took Saigon and reunification became a political reality. The State Bank of Vietnam — the northern institution — began issuing coinage for the newly consolidated south almost immediately, and these aluminum pieces were among the first instruments of monetary integration pushed into circulation across the former Republic of Vietnam. They saw little actual use; the 1978 currency reform rendered the entire dong series obsolete, and most examples avoided meaningful wear entirely.
