Issued in 1987, this coin commemorates the Arch of Triumph in Pyongyang, completed in 1982 to mark Kim Il Sung's 70th birthday and his claimed role in leading resistance against Japanese occupation. At 60 meters, it was deliberately built one meter taller than the Arc de Triomphe in Paris — a detail the DPRK's state media has never left unmentioned. These commemorative issues were produced almost exclusively for foreign currency earnings through international numismatic sales, not domestic circulation; most North Korean citizens would never have handled one.
