Thiệu Trị, the third emperor of the Nguyễn dynasty, oversaw a mint operation that remained deliberately conservative — recoining older gold into new issues was common practice, and many pieces attributed to his reign were struck from metal reclaimed from Gia Long and Minh Mạng-era currency. The 49mm diameter places this among the larger gold denominations issued under the Nguyễn, reserved almost exclusively for court use, tributary gifts, and imperial rewards rather than anything approaching general commerce.
His reign ended with his death in 1847, making the production window for this type just six years.
