Đồng Khánh was installed on the throne by French Resident-General Paul Bert in 1885 following the exile of his predecessor Hàm Nghi, making his reign one of the most overtly colonial mandates in Nguyễn dynasty history. His court's gold coinage was minted under circumstances where the emperor held little autonomous authority, effectively issuing currency at French sufferance. The reign lasted only four years before his death in 1889 at around twenty years old.
Joyaux #321 is among the more elusive classifications in this series — gold issues of compliant but short-lived emperors rarely survived in quantity outside court and temple hoards.
