| Obverse description | A large, elaborately engraved field displaying a central crowned ducal monogram in the form of an interlaced cipher, surrounded by luxuriantly scrolling foliate and acanthus branches issuing from the base. Arranged around the central device are eleven heraldic shields bearing the arms of the various territories of Brunswick-Lüneburg-Calenberg, each surmounted by a crown or coronet, rendered in fine detail in the baroque style. The peripheral legend reads EX DURIS GLORIA (Glory from hardship), with the date 1677 and mintmaster's initial B incorporated into the legend. The overall composition is characteristic of the grand ducal Baroque coinage tradition of the late seventeenth-century German states, with the field entirely filled by heraldic and ornamental elements leaving no plain ground visible. |
