Obverse description Equestrian portrait of Duke Frederick Ulrich facing right, depicted in full armour with a flowing cloak billowing behind him, holding a baton or commander's staff aloft in his right hand. The horse is shown in a proud prancing pose with richly ornamented saddlecloth and caparison. The ruler's plumed helmet is visible atop his armoured head. The entire equestrian group is rendered in high relief with exceptional detail characteristic of early seventeenth-century German hammered multiple thalers. A beaded inner circle frames the central device, with the circumferential Latin legend reading: ✠ FRIDERICUS ∗ ULRICUS ∗ DEI ∗ GRA ∗ DUX ∗ BRUNSVICENSIS ∗ ET ∗ LUNEBURGENSIS.
