Reverse description The elaborately quartered royal arms of Hanover, comprising the heraldic charges of England, Scotland, Ireland, Hanover and Brunswick within a baroque cartouche-style shield, surmounted by a royal crown. The legend flanking the shield reads 5 THALER to the left and HARZ-GOLD to the right, indicating the Harz mining provenance of the gold used in striking. The date 1849 appears in the lower exergue below the shield. The overall composition reflects the Ausbeute (mining yield) tradition of German coinage.
