| Obverse description | Bare-headed, draped bust of Duke Charles I of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel facing right, rendered in a refined neoclassical style with finely engraved hair tied at the nape. Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel's Charles I ruled under perpetual Habsburg pressure, and his gold emissions of this period reflect a principality still operating its own mint with notable autonomy despite being thoroughly embedded in the Empire's political machinery. The Clausthaler mint in the Harz region — powered by silver and gold from local mining operations — was responsible for much of the duchy's higher denomination coinage through the 1770s.
Welter 2697 is not a common attribution, and examples in collectible condition surface infrequently at auction.
