Obverse description Bare-headed, draped bust of Duke Charles I of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel facing right, rendered in a refined neoclassical style with finely engraved hair tied at the nape. The circular Latin legend reads CAROLVS D.G.DVX BR.ET LVN., identifying the ruler by name and title. The portrait fills the central field with strong relief, the truncation of the bust falling near the lower rim. The coin's milled edge is visible at the periphery.

Additional information

Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel's Charles I ruled under perpetual Habsburg pressure, and his gold emissions of this period reflect a principality still operating its own mint with notable autonomy despite being thoroughly embedded in the Empire's political machinery. The Clausthaler mint in the Harz region — powered by silver and gold from local mining operations — was responsible for much of the duchy's higher denomination coinage through the 1770s.

Welter 2697 is not a common attribution, and examples in collectible condition surface infrequently at auction.
