Anthony (Anton) came to the Saxon throne in 1827 at the age of 71, having spent decades as crown prince under his brother Frederick Augustus I. His reign coincided with serious constitutional pressure — the July Revolution in Paris directly triggered the Saxon unrest of 1830, which forced Anthony to accept a far more liberal constitution and bring in his nephew Frederick Augustus as co-regent. These gold 5-Taler pieces were struck across that entire political rupture, meaning early and late examples in this date range technically span two very different governmental arrangements under the same monarch's name.
