Turkmenistan's 2009 coinage series followed the 2009 redenomination, in which the new manat replaced the old at a rate of 5,000 to 1 — effectively erasing the zeros accumulated during the post-Soviet inflation of the 1990s. The teňňe subdivisions were introduced as part of that reformed system, though in practice such small denominations saw minimal transactional use in an economy where state-subsidized prices kept everyday costs artificially low.
