Obverse description The central device features the national coat of arms of Samoa, comprising a quartered shield displaying a coconut palm above stylized ocean waves in the chief, and five stars of the Southern Cross constellation in the base. The shield is set against a globular background and flanked by two olive branches. Above the shield, a Christian cross radiates rays of light. The country name SAMOA arcs along the upper legend in large spaced lettering, while a scroll banner below the shield bears the national motto FA'AVAE I LE ATUA SAMOA. The denomination $5 appears in the lower field.
