Obverse description The obverse displays the national coat of arms of Samoa at centre, featuring a quartered shield with the Southern Cross constellation and traditional symbols, supported by olive branches and surmounted by a cross, set against a horizontally lined field evoking ocean waves. The irregular crescent-shaped flan has a jagged left edge, forming one interlocking half of a two-piece puzzle coin. The legend '1997 - 2000' curves along the upper rim, 'SAMOA' runs vertically along the right border, and the denomination '$5' appears prominently at lower centre.
