Robert Louis Stevenson spent the last four years of his life in Samoa, arriving in 1890 and dying at Vailima in December 1894 — the same year this coin was issued. He had come seeking relief from tuberculosis and stayed, learning enough Samoan to earn the name Tusitala, "Teller of Tales," from the islanders who carried his coffin up Mount Vaea. Tanumafili II, the head of state whose portrait anchors the obverse, was born just a year before Stevenson's death and would reign until 2007, making him the longest-serving head of state in Samoan history.
