The Stroud Pound launched in September 2009 as one of Britain's earliest local complementary currencies, predating the better-known Bristol Pound by three years. Administered through the Stroud Pound Co-op Ltd, it was designed to keep spending circulating within the Stroud district rather than bleeding out to national chains — a straightforward economic localism argument with roots in the Totnes Pound experiment of 2007.
Printed locally rather than through a specialist security printer, the notes carry no significant anti-counterfeiting technology beyond basic design complexity. The scheme remained small-scale throughout its lifespan, with a limited number of participating businesses.
