Additional information

Puigcerdà's 1641 emission belongs to the Corpus de Sang moment — the Catalan Revolt against Philip IV, which had erupted in June 1640 when Catalan peasants and troops massacred the Viceroy of Catalonia in Barcelona. The principality, now operating under French protection after pledging allegiance to Louis XIII, needed its own coinage to function as a sovereign administrative entity. Puigcerdà, a mountain town in the Pyrenean Cerdanya, was one of several Catalan mints activated specifically because Madrid's supply lines had been severed.

The revolt lasted until 1659, when the Treaty of the Pyrenees permanently ceded the northern Cerdanya to France.
