Obverse description Central field occupied by the crowned Arms of Aragon — a vertically striped shield of four pallets — surmounted by a royal crown with fleur-de-lis finial. The shield is set within a beaded inner circle, with the circular Latin legend reading V S PRINCIPATVS CATAL (5 Sous, Principality of Catalonia) distributed around the periphery. The lettering is in Gothic style, separated by small pellet stops, typical of mid-17th-century Catalan hammered coinage. The flan is irregular in shape, as is characteristic of the hammered technique of this period.
