Additional information

The Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek crown was struck at the Pretoria Mint, which Kruger's government established in 1890 specifically to assert fiscal independence from British-controlled financial networks — a pointed political act in a territory sitting atop the richest gold reef ever discovered. The Berlin firm Otto Nolte & Co. supplied the machinery.

Hern distinguishes Z36 from Z37 by the single versus double shaft of the waggon tongue on the reverse die — a detail invisible at a glance but well-documented among ZAR specialists. The 1892 date covers both varieties, so attribution requires close examination of that specific element.
