Somaliland has issued its own coinage since 1994 despite lacking UN recognition as a sovereign state — a peculiarity that places these pieces in a legal grey zone enjoyed by collectors of unrecognized territory issues. The cockatiel series to which this piece belongs was aimed squarely at the thematic wildlife collector market rather than domestic circulation, and most examples went directly into collector hands without ever reaching Hargeisa.
