| Additional information |
Somaliland declared independence from Somalia in 1991 and has functioned as a self-governing state ever since, though it remains unrecognized by any United Nations member. The Bank of Somaliland issues coinage primarily for domestic symbolic and small-transaction purposes, and this series featuring primate species — including the pig-tailed macaque, native to Southeast Asia rather than the Horn of Africa — reflects a collector-market strategy more than local fauna representation.
The pig-tailed macaque was listed as Vulnerable by the IUCN in 2008, lending the series a conservation framing that expanded its international appeal.
