| Obverse description | Printed in dark blue-black on an orange-yellow guilloche underprint, the obverse carries an intaglio oval portrait vignette at left with a bare-shouldered likeness of King George VI facing left. The denomination FIVE SHILLINGS is set in large bold letterpress at centre, flanked by serial numbers, with an ornate numeral cartouche at right; a central band below carries the value in Arabic and Hindi scripts alongside the legal tender clause. The place and date of issue, Nairobi, 1st June 1939, appear at lower centre above three facsimile signatures of Members of the East African Currency Board. |
