Obverse description Printed in dark blue-black on an orange-yellow guilloche underprint, the obverse carries an intaglio oval portrait vignette at left with a bare-shouldered likeness of King George VI facing left. The denomination FIVE SHILLINGS is set in large bold letterpress at centre, flanked by serial numbers, with an ornate numeral cartouche at right; a central band below carries the value in Arabic and Hindi scripts alongside the legal tender clause. The place and date of issue, Nairobi, 1st June 1939, appear at lower centre above three facsimile signatures of Members of the East African Currency Board.

Reverse description Printed entirely in red-orange on white paper, the reverse presents a central oval vignette of a lion walking left against a mountainous landscape, enclosed within an octagonal frame. The numeral 5 appears in square cartouches flanking the central vignette, with large corner numerals repeated at each angle of the note, while elaborate geometric guilloche rosette patterns fill the lateral fields. The denomination FIVE SHILLINGS is inscribed in rectangular panels positioned at the top and bottom of the central design.
