| Obverse description | The obverse retains the design of the host Spanish colonial 8 Reales, here showing remnants of the laureate and draped bust of King Carlos IV facing right, with the original milled edge of the host coin now forming the inner border around the central circular perforation. The outer legend, struck by William Henshall on behalf of the New South Wales Colonial Government, reads DEI GRATIA 1806 CAROLUS IIII in relief around the upper periphery, with NEW SOUTH WALES 1813 counterstamped on the inner ring bordering the hole. The dual dating — 1806 referring to the host coin's minting year and 1813 to the counterstamp application — is characteristic of the Holey Dollar series. The field retains ghosted relief elements of the original Spanish royal portrait, now partially obscured by the punch removal of the central plug. Dot stops separate the legend elements in the outer inscription. |
