Somaliland declared independence from Somalia in 1991 but remains unrecognized by any United Nations member state, meaning its coinage has no legal tender status outside its own borders and circulates — to the extent it circulates at all — entirely within a diplomatically invisible economy. The sooty mangabey, Cercocebus atys, is native to West Africa, not the Horn of Africa, which makes its appearance on a Somaliland coin a collector-market decision rather than a natural history one.
