Somaliland declared independence from Somalia in May 1991, though no UN member state has formally recognized it. This note marks the fifth anniversary of that declaration — an unusual decision for a government still fighting for international legitimacy, issuing commemorative currency that most of the world officially pretended didn't exist.
Pick 8 is the only commemorative in the early Somaliland series. The denomination itself was economically trivial by 1996; the note's purpose was political symbolism, not purchasing power.
