Obverse description Brown note with dark brown letterpress print on a pale ground, centred with a large cartographic underprint of the island of Malta. The British Royal Coat of Arms appears at the top centre, below which the authorising legal text is set out in full. An embossed dry seal of Malta is impressed at the centre, and the serial number is positioned to the left margin. Denomination numerals '5s.' appear at each corner.

Reverse description Plain white ground with pale olive-grey letterpress text printed in the centre, carrying the legal tender and convertibility declarations in two separate paragraphs. A faint embossed seal impression is visible through the paper at the centre. Denomination numerals '5s.' are printed at each of the four corners, with no vignette or guilloche ornamentation.
