Obverse description The obverse is printed in green and purple tones, with a central vignette of a tropical riverside landscape with tall palm trees and dense foliage set against a light guilloche underprint. The issuing authority title appears at the top within a decorative banner reading FEDERATION OF NIGERIA, with CENTRAL BANK OF NIGERIA and the promise-to-pay clause below in intaglio letterpress. Three facsimile signatures of the Governor and two Directors appear at the lower centre, with the date 15TH SEPTEMBER, 1958, denomination numerals 5/- at each upper corner, and a large blank watermark oval to the right.

Reverse description The reverse is printed in a single purple-violet tone and centres on a detailed intaglio vignette of a cluster of tall coconut palms and tropical trees beside a calm body of water, with a low hillside in the distance. The bank title CENTRAL BANK OF NIGERIA is inscribed at the upper left, with denomination numerals 5/- at each corner and the legend FIVE SHILLINGS in a solid panel at the foot of the design. The border consists of a repeating wave-pattern guilloche frame running along all four sides.
