| Obverse description | Right-facing draped bust of President Julius Nyerere occupies the central field of the decagonal flan, rendered in high relief with fine textural detail on the hair. Flanking the portrait on either side are sprigs of flowering vegetation in low relief. Tanzania's second-republic coinage of the late 1980s was produced under severe foreign-exchange constraints, with the government periodically unable to secure blanks from overseas suppliers. The 5 Shilingi saw interrupted mintage across its three-year window partly for this reason, and examples from different years can show measurable variation in planchet quality.
