Brunei's Currency and Monetary Board was established in 1967, just two years after the country opted out of Malaysian federation — a decision that required Brunei to build its own monetary infrastructure almost from scratch. The interchangeability agreement with Singapore, in force since 1967, means these small-denomination coins circulated alongside Singapore's equivalents at par throughout this series' entire run.
The shift to a second portrait was driven by the Sultan's decision to update official imagery following decades of use of the first effigy. Brunei's low population and the dominance of electronic transactions in daily commerce kept actual circulation volumes modest.
