Reverse description A large radiant sun occupies the central field, rendered as a striated disc from which twelve broad rays emanate to the periphery, each ray flanked by alternating beams of finer lines. Twelve five-petalled cherry blossoms (sakura) are evenly distributed among the rays, lending the design a distinctly Japanese character. Four kanji characters are positioned at the cardinal and intercardinal points around the circumference, together reading 大日本 (Great Japan) above and 昭和 (Shōwa) to the sides, with the reign year 十三年 (Year 13) at the base. The entire composition is enclosed within a raised beaded border.
