Obverse description Central field bears the denomination inscribed vertically in two large Chinese characters, 五 (go, five) above 錢 (sen), enclosed within a wreath of two rice stalks rising from the base and meeting at the top of the design. The rice stalks are tied at the bottom with a decorative ribbon bow. A rope-pattern border encircles the entire design near the rim.
