Obverse description Central field dominated by a large Imperial chrysanthemum crest (kiku mon) rendered in high relief with sixteen petals radiating from a central boss. The denomination is inscribed in the upper field in Kanji characters (錢 五, reading '5 Sen'), flanked symmetrically to either side of the crest. Below the chrysanthemum, the Western numeral '5' appears at lower left and the Latin legend 'SEN' at lower center-right. Two raised dots flank the crest horizontally at mid-field, and the entire design is contained within a continuous beaded border.

Reverse description The large Kanji numeral 五 (five) occupies the center of the field, enclosed within a prominent beaded circle. Surrounding this inner circle, the reign-era date and issuing authority are rendered in Kanji characters arranged around the border: the Meiji era year appears at the top (e.g. 年十三治明 for Meiji year 30), and the legend 大日本 (Great Japan) is distributed at the bottom and sides. Two raised dots flank the beaded circle at the mid-field position, and a milled outer border frames the entire design.
