Additional information

Pio IX's early coinage, including this 5 Scudi, was struck during one of the most turbulent pontificates in the history of the Papal States. Elected in 1846 with a reputation as a reformer, Pius IX briefly flirted with liberal constitutionalism before the 1848 revolutions forced him to flee Rome in disguise. The Roman Republic was declared in his absence, suspending papal monetary authority entirely until French troops restored him in 1850.

The dating range of this type therefore spans both the pre-flight optimism and the post-restoration reaction — two politically opposite phases of the same reign, unified under a single coin type.
