The Banca Nazionale Somala was established in 1960 following independence and the merger of the former Trust Territory of Somalia with British Somaliland. This note belongs to the second issue series, which replaced the transitional East African shilling and consolidated Somalia's currency under a fully national institution. The Officina Carte Valori — the Italian state security printer — handled production throughout this period, a practical continuity given Somalia's administrative history as an Italian-administered UN trust territory.

Pick 9 is notably scarcer than the higher denominations of the same series, likely reflecting lower print runs rather than heavier circulation attrition.
