Issued following the coronation of King Vajiralongkorn, who ascended after the death of his father Bhumibol Adulyadej in October 2016 — the longest-reigning monarch in Thai history. The transition required a complete restriking of the circulating series, with all denominations updated to carry the new royal portrait. The 5 satang occupies the lowest rung of Thai coinage in practical terms; with purchasing power essentially nil, these reach circulation mainly through formal change-making in Buddhist temple offerings and ceremonial contexts.
