Issued as part of the FAO coinage program, which ran globally from the late 1960s onward and tasked participating central banks with producing coins explicitly promoting food security and agricultural development. Morocco's contributions to the series were modest in number. This particular piece dates to a year when Hassan II's government was still managing the economic strain of the Western Sahara conflict, which had consumed a significant share of state resources through the late 1970s and into the 1980s.
