V. Filonardi & C. was a private Italian commercial concession operating in Somalia — specifically the Benadir coast — under a charter from the Italian government, which had neither the infrastructure nor the immediate appetite to administer the territory directly. The firm was granted rights to collect customs and run commercial operations, and this 5 Rupie note is among the earliest paper money ever issued for Italian Somaliland, predating any government-issued currency for the territory by years.
The embossed seal was the sole security measure — a thin guarantee in a region where the issuing authority itself would be dissolved and replaced by a successor company within a few years.
