Indonesia's aluminium small denominations of this period were struck as the New Order government under Suharto consolidated power following the upheaval of 1965–66. The 5 rupiah had negligible purchasing power by 1970 — inflation during the late Sukarno years had been catastrophic, reaching over 600% annually by 1966 — making coins of this value essentially tokens rather than functional currency from the moment they left the mint.
