| Obverse description | Central shield-shaped coat of arms of Maluku, featuring a crowned emblem flanked by laurel branches, with a banner inscribed SIWA LIMA at the base. Two traditional sailing vessels (kora-kora) are depicted in the lower field, one to the left and one to the right of the shield. The legend MALUKU arcs along the upper rim, while the denomination 5 RUPEES appears in the exergue. The date 2017 is split across the left and right fields flanking the central device. |

Issued as part of Indonesia's 2017 wildlife conservation series, this piece commemorates the Pacific sailfin tang — a reef fish native to the Indo-Pacific waters that fall largely within Indonesia's vast exclusive economic zone. Indonesia controls the world's largest archipelagic maritime territory, and the series was explicitly tied to government messaging around marine biodiversity protection.
The denomination is notably fictional for Indonesian domestic circulation — the rupiah had not included a 5-rupiah coin in everyday use for decades by 2017, making this effectively a collector piece dressed in circulation clothing.
