| Obverse description | Forward-facing bust of Phra. Upali Nahimi at centre, enclosed within a plain interrupted inner circle, with the commemorative dates 1753 and 2003 flanking the portrait on left and right respectively, and the numeral 250 displayed in large font across the lower portion of the effigy. The legend PHRA. UPALI NAHIMI appears in Latin script above the portrait, with the equivalent legend in Sinhala script at the top of the outer circle and Tamil and English inscriptions on either side. The inscription SYAMOPASAMPADA ANNIVERSARY in Sinhala bridges the gap in the interrupted inner circle, with the Tamil equivalent rendered in smaller lettering in the outer rim below, the two legends separated by five-pointed stars. |

Below the central numeral, the denomination is inscribed in three languages: in Sinhala (රුපියල් පහයි) and Tamil (ஐந்து ரூபாய்) flanking the numeral, and FIVE RUPEES in Latin script beneath. The date 2003 appears in the exergue at the bottom, with a milled border encircling the entire design. |
