Issued to commemorate the 150th birth anniversary of Bal Gangadhar Tilak, the Pune-born independence activist whose slogan "Swarajya is my birthright and I shall have it" made him one of the most inflammatory figures the British Raj ever tried to suppress. Tilak was prosecuted twice for sedition — the second time in 1908, resulting in six years' transportation to Mandalay prison in Burma.
The Reserve Bank of India has issued commemorative five-rupee pieces in this period for a wide range of figures, and circulation of these types was always limited in practice.
