Issued within months of Indira Gandhi's assassination on 31 October 1984, this commemorative was among the fastest memorial coinages the Reserve Bank of India had ever authorized. The political urgency was considerable — the Congress Party needed the issue in circulation well before the December 1984 general elections, which Rajiv Gandhi ultimately won in a landslide partly driven by sympathy voting.
KM#150 is frequently encountered with uneven edge reeding, a known production inconsistency at the Bombay and Calcutta mints during this run.
