Rani Gaidinliu led a religio-political resistance movement against British rule in Nagaland from the age of thirteen, eventually commanding several thousand Naga followers under the Heraka movement. Arrested in 1932 at sixteen, she spent nearly the entire British colonial period in prison — not released until 1947. Jawaharlal Nehru gave her the honorific "Rani" and championed her cause, yet she spent much of independent India's early decades in renewed conflict, this time opposing the Naga separatist movement on grounds that it threatened the region's integration with India.
Her centenary fell in 2015. The commemorative issue under KM#489 was struck in nickel brass rather than the cupro-nickel used for most Indian commemoratives of the period — a quiet material distinction that most catalog entries pass over without comment.
