Additional information

This issue coincides with a politically volatile moment in Nepali history — 1990 was the year the Jana Andolan (People's Movement) forced King Birendra to abandon the Panchayat system and accept constitutional monarchy, fundamentally restructuring the relationship between crown and state. Coins bearing his effigy from this transitional year straddle two political orders: struck under an absolute monarchy, circulated under a constitutional one.
