Issued to mark the UN's International Year of Rural Women in 1980, this coin was part of Nepal's broader participation in a wave of commemorative issues produced across the developing world during the UN Decade for Women (1976–1985). Birendra, who came to power in 1972 following the death of his father Mahendra, used such international occasions to project a modernizing image while the country remained a constitutional monarchy with tightly constrained political freedoms — party politics were banned under the Panchayat system until 1990.
