Obverse description Intaglio portrait of King Birendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev in profile facing right, wearing the traditional plumed crown, positioned at left on a pink and red guilloche underprint. A detailed vignette of the multi-tiered Taleju Temple in Kathmandu occupies the centre, rendered in ochre and brown tones. The watermark window appears as a plain reserved panel at right, with the Nepal Rastra Bank circular seal in the upper right corner; Devanagari inscriptions and the denomination numeral '5' appear in the upper field.

Reverse description The watermark window reserved panel occupies the left portion, framed by ornate temple-column borders surmounted by a circular seal. The central and right vignette presents two yaks rendered in fine intaglio engraving, grazing on a high-altitude plain with a dramatic snow-capped mountain range — understood to include Mount Everest — rising in the background. The Royal Arms of Nepal appear in an oval vignette at upper right, and the denomination is expressed in Devanagari, Nepali, and English along the lower margin.
