The Cocos (Keeling) Islands issued their own rupee coinage from 1977 until 1994, when the territory was formally integrated into the Australian dollar system following a 1993 referendum. This 2023 issue is a retrospective commemorative — there is no longer a functioning rupee economy on the islands, and these pieces are produced for collectors rather than circulation. The original rupee series was one of the last functioning company-store currency systems in the world, descended from the Clunies-Ross family's private monetary control over the atoll's Cocos Malay workforce.
