Additional information

Yuryev-Polsky was founded in 1152 by Yuri Dolgoruky, the same Rus prince credited with founding Moscow the same year. The town's St. George Cathedral, completed in 1234, is one of the last major white-stone monuments built before the Mongol invasion effectively ended that architectural tradition in northeastern Russia. This coin is part of a Bank of Russia bimetallic series commemorating ancient towns, several of which exist today as minor provincial centers with populations in the low thousands — places whose historical weight vastly exceeds their modern footprint.
